Stay Safe While Shoveling Snow

After heavy snowfall, clearing your driveway or walkway might seem like just another chore, but did you know it could put your heart at risk? CCA's Dr. Lance Sullenberger offers these life-saving tips to protect yourself:

Know the Risks:

  • • Cold weather and physical exertion, like shoveling, can increase your risk of a cardiac event—even if you don’t have pre-existing conditions.

  • Symptoms like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue should never be ignored.

Pace Yourself:

  • Break shoveling into short 10-20 minute sessions.

  • Avoid overexerting yourself, especially if you’re not accustomed to regular physical activity.

Shovel Smart:

  • Take smaller scoops of snow to reduce strain on your body.

  • Listen to Your Body:

If you feel unwell, stop immediately and seek medical attention. Capital Cardiology Associates offers walk-in urgent care at all locations to help assess symptoms.

Be a Good Neighbor:

  • If you’re healthy, consider helping neighbors who may be at higher risk.

With dangerously cold temperatures forecasted, take precautions to stay safe.
