A First for the Capital Region
Minimally Invasive Treatment for Tricuspid Valve Disease
Capital Cardiology Associates, in collaboration with Albany Medical Center, has successfully performed the first Tricuspid Clip (TriClip) procedure in the Capital Region. The procedure was performed by Dr. Augustin DeLago and Dr. Kamal Singh, marking an important milestone in the treatment of complex heart valve disease in our community.
This advanced therapy is now available to appropriate patients through Capital Cardiology Associates and is not currently available at other hospitals in the region.
Understanding Tricuspid Valve Disease
The tricuspid valve is located on the right side of the heart and helps regulate blood flow between the heart chambers. When the valve does not close properly, blood can leak backward, a condition known as tricuspid regurgitation. Over time, this can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling in the legs or abdomen due to fluid retention.
Historically, treatment options for severe tricuspid valve disease have been limited, particularly for patients who are not good candidates for open-heart surgery.
What Is TriClip?
TriClip is a minimally invasive treatment designed to reduce leakage in the tricuspid valve without the need for open-heart surgery.
Instead of opening the chest, physicians guide a thin catheter through a vein in the groin to the heart. Using advanced imaging, a small device is carefully placed on the valve to help it close more effectively. The procedure is typically performed under anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.
Who May Be a Candidate?
TriClip may be considered for patients who:
Have moderate to severe tricuspid valve leakage
Experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling
Are considered high risk for traditional heart surgery
Continue to have symptoms despite appropriate medical therapy
Every patient is evaluated by a specialized heart team, including cardiologists and structural heart experts, to determine whether this approach is appropriate.
Potential Benefits
While individual results vary, many patients experience:
Reduced fluid buildup and swelling
Improved breathing and stamina
Greater ability to perform daily activities
Improved overall quality of life
A Collaborative Approach to Advanced Heart Care
This procedure reflects the ongoing collaboration between Capital Cardiology Associates and Albany Medical Center to bring advanced, evidence-based cardiac therapies to patients in the Capital Region.
By expanding access to minimally invasive valve treatments, our teams are able to offer options to patients who previously had limited or no surgical alternatives.
Learn More
Patients who have been diagnosed with tricuspid valve disease or who are experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling should speak with their Capital Cardiology Associates provider for more information. Your provider can help determine whether referral to a specialized structural heart team is appropriate and discuss available treatment options based on your individual condition.
