Peripheral Atherectomy Angioplasty and Stenting

Patient Education from Capital Cardiology Associates

Coronary arteries are the blood vessels that feed your heart muscle. If the arteries harden and narrow, your heart muscle can’t get the blood it needs to work well. Coronary heart disease can lead to a heart attack. It is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States.

During this procedure, a coronary stent (a tube) is placed in the coronary arteries that supply the heart, to keep the arteries open in the treatment of coronary heart disease. It is used in a procedure called percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Stents reduce chest pain and have been shown to improve survivability in the event of an acute myocardial infarction.
